As much as I wish I was traveling to Tokyo to do some international destination wedding photography, it will actually just be for vacation and fun. Not that I will really mind because the week prior I will have been in Sydney, Australia photographing a destination Indian wedding that will probably be the wedding of the year for 2013, and it’s only the first week in January! When deciding where to go on the long trip back locations like New Zealand came up, but Betty of course really wants to go there as well so we decided maybe somewhere in Asia instead and we’ll plan a New Zealand trip some other time, hopefully to photograph a destination wedding in New Zealand, but vacation is good too. After some debating and Googling and Trip Advisoring (can that be a verb like Googling too?), Japan was decided on beating out destinations like Seoul, South Korea. The fact that my good friend and past co-worker, Tomomi, would be in Japan at the same time and could be my local guide also helped seal the deal to return to Tokyo and to visit Tomomi’s hometown in Saitama prefecture. I actually visited Tokyo and Kyoto in college as part of a tour group so I have already seen the “major” tourist sites like Asakusa temple, Tokyo Tower, Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), etc. So now, with a better camera in hand, I have a couple of days to explore the city and see regular life with Tomomi. I begged her to find anyone to do pre-wedding photos (as is a Chinese custom) but apparently their is a superstition in Japan that if you wear a wedding dress before your wedding you will never get married! So I guess pre-wedding photography shoots are not popular in Japan at all like they are in China =). Anywho, I’ll probably end up with tons of touristy photo, time-lapses, and photos of Tomomi and her family in kimonos at least! So, what is the point of this entire blog post about traveling to Tokyo? Just a chance to ask for any recommendations on this to see or do with a couple of days in Tokyo and Saitama, and also to post a few SUPER OLD photos from my 2002 trip to Tokyo that were taken with a 1 Megapixel Sony point and shoot camera (ok it was probably a few more than that but it seems so old by comparison). Unfortunately as well, while it will be the middle of Summer the week before in Sydney, Australia, it’s going to be the middle of Winter in Tokyo, Japan! So the first thing on my list will probably be to buy an extra jacket, but after that I’m probably following some advice from this Trip Advisor article called “3 Days in Tokyo,” can you recommend anything else? I’ll probably head back to Shinjuku and Akihabara for some time-lapses of people and street photography but I’m open for suggestions!

Hey look, doing people portraits even back in 2002! These guys sold me a Go set.
Will I take better photos this time around? Check back in late January 2013 to find out!
