Being the savvy digital communicator she is, our friend Jodi Kiely asked us to help her update her portfolio for use on her various online presences such as Twitter, LinkedIn, and her Blog: Jodi Kiely Communications. More than happy to come out and shoot a model like Jodi, we headed over to her apartment complex to get some professional and candid shots that she could use around the internet.

We went to the office center of her apartment complex and got a few “working” shots of Jodi with some props like the laptop at the top and the Blackberry below. We didn’t have a firm plan as to what shots we all wanted but knew we wanted a good mix that could be used in a variety of digital publications to showcase her professionalism and work ethic.

I think this was by far Jodi’s favorite shot of the day, going for a 3/4 view by tilting her slightly away from the camera. The other trick we used here is to have our model (Jodi) put her hand on her hip which really accentuates the shoulder line and makes for a stronger portrait.

Similar tricks of the trade in this photo, by asking Jodi to rest her arms on the counter behind her this pushes out the chest and in turn broadens the shoulders, making for a more powerful stance. This was the very next shot we did, building off of the previous one. We did mix things up a bit by having our model look off camera to add an overall diversity to the portfolio shoot.

Outfit Change!

We changed outfits and changed locations, moving to the recreation room of the apartment complex. These were the “casual” shots of the day and could be used in a variety of ways by Jodi to show a broadness of character. Of course, she wouldn’t be the same without the Blackberry so this was a more “working casual” shot in her fun black and white dress.

This was a full body shot instead of the upper torso shots we were taking before. Another quick posing tip: having our model extend her legs to make them look longer. Instead of just asking your model to sit with her legs in front of her, we positioned them at a slight angle which elongated them and made the shot just that little bit better.

Sometimes the candids come out the best! This was a personal favorite shot of the day because of the dramatic lighting coming through the gate downstairs. Our photoshoot was officially over at this point and we were wrapping things up and heading out. As we were leaving the apartment complex there is a gate going outside, and when I looked back Jodi was doing her normal thing aka emailing on her blackberry! With the shadows from the gate falling creating really unique shapes, I moved her one step back so that her face was in the light and told her to keep emailing away while I took a few more photos. What resulted was my favorite shot of the day because it shows Jodi in her natural environment and not posing at all.
